Soles with Souls
A breakthrough initiative for the Indian tyre industry
JK Tyre pioneers a revolution in association with FDDI

New Delhi, April 19, 2011:A part of JK Organisation,JK Tyre & Industries Ltd., India's leading four wheeler tyre manufacturers, launched SOLES WITH SOULS; a first of its kind tyre recycling initiative in the world. JK Tyre, in association with Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI), attempts to recycle tyres using unconventional methods and innovatively create footwear and accessories from old and recycled tyres. The initiative could become a business proposition for the tyreindustry in Indiaby way of utilizing what is 'hazardous waste' and making it viable.
With this breakthrough, JK Tyre intends to encourage the industry towards recycling and introduce the concept which could become a revolution in the coming years.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. RaghuptiSinghania, Vice Chairman & Managing Director, JK Tyre& Industries, said It is our way of showing respect to the Earth we inhabit. The problem of discarded tyre has been with us since we started the automotive age. The environment of the tyres impact ranges from aesthetics to the hazardous to public health concerns. 'Soles with Souls' will open up a new front towards environmental consciousness and will inspire responsiveness to emerging socio-environment needs. Going forward, we would like to consider this as a business opportunity and we are indeed proud to have pioneered this concept. The funds generated by the sale of these footwear will be used to promote the initiative further.
About 88 million tyres are a part of 33 million vehicles that are added to the roads in the last three years in India, which include two, three, four and six wheelers, posing a potential threat to the environment. This creates an enormous potential for reuse of rubber in our country.
Over 40 shoes and accessories, designed by students of FDDI from the recycled tyres were showcased through a fashion walk. The designs turned some heads, rewarding the work of several months of dedication, conceptualization and implementation. The variety of designs included right from office wear to casual sandals, to belts and fancy bags. The students were trained by JK Tyre on the usage of rubber to create the fancy products.
It has given our students an altogether a new canvas to work on. At the same time, we end up recycling enormous amounts of rubber lying waste. The students have been successful in portraying their creativity, which reflects in their designs. I must congratulate JK Tyre for taken up such an initiative. I see a start of global revolution and the initiative aptly complements the upcoming Earth Day when the world looks to synergize against environmental degradation. said, Mr. Rajeev Lakhara, Managing Director, FDDI.

JKTyre plans to organize exhibitions and use various other industry platforms to create awareness on the concept.
JK Tyre, which has pioneered radial tyre technology in India, has also been at the forefront of environment friendly initiatives. It has underlined its commitment to the environment and conservation by launching India's first eco-friendly 'green' tyre in 2005. This tyrewas the outcome of hi-end technology whereby the traditional carbon black is replaced by environment friendly silica that besides being less hazardous for the environment also ensures better fuel efficiency due to its lower rolling resistance. The green tyre was developed indigenously at JK Tyre supported state-of-the-art R&D facilities at Hari Shankar Singhania Elastomer and Tyre Research Institute (HASETRI). JK Tyre's Banmore plant has been awarded the Golden Peacock Environment Management Award by the World Environment Foundation, UK, in the manufacturing category for excellence in environment protection.
